What is a micro wedding?

Micro weddings may seem like a new idea, and a necessity because of recent Covid restrictions, but actually Micro weddings have been a popular idea for a long time, especially in Scotland where lots of people choose to elope.

A micro wedding is essentially as the name suggests – a wedding on a micro scale. Some people choose to have a micro wedding to allow them to focus on getting married without a big party, some people choose to mix a micro wedding with having a bigger celebration later on down the line – that’s an especially popular decision because of covid restrictions.

There isn’t really a definitive number of guests that helps define a ‘micro wedding’ but it usually means the couple coming with very few guests, and quite often just by themselves.

Why have a micro wedding in Scotland?

If you’re looking to have a micro wedding, Scotland is a great choice of destination.

With a mixture of great hospitality, beautiful landscapes and fairly relaxed rules about where you can get married – Scotland is a great destination for a micro wedding.

Scotland has a history as being a destination for couples who would like to Elope – and partly because of that you’ll now find lots of suppliers who are able to help you adapt your wedding plans into a micro wedding, especially if Covid has meant that you now need to change plans.

Scotland is also packed with great locations to hold your micro wedding, whether that be in more traditional hotel/castle venue or in selecting a holiday accommodation out in the countryside for just the two of you.

Mini weddings in a Covid era.

If there’s one thing that 2020 has taught us, it’s that we don’t know what the future holds – not ideal advice when it comes to planning a wedding. The continual ‘what if’ and ‘what if not’ of wedding planning can be exhausting and frustrating – so what is the alternative? Focus on what you CAN do – it’s time to plan a micro wedding in Scotland!

Eloping in Scotland has a long tradition of being a popular route for many couples who were either looking to get married away from the spotlight, or as simply as possible. While the roots of eloping to Scotland are often seen as being a quick dash across the border, Scotland has been a popular destination for couples looking to elope or have a small wedding for the last few years. The combination of great hospitality, beautiful landscapes and fairly straightforward paperwork have made Scotland a popular destination for small weddings for quite some time. Now, with Covid continuing to make planning a challenge, Scotland is a perfect destination for those looking to make the most of their amended wedding plans.

Based in Inverness, in the Highlands of Scotland, it’s my pleasure to welcome visitors from all over the world who choose Scotland as a place to come for a wedding, elopement or couples portrait session as part of your holiday. From my base in the Highlands I am approximately 3-4 hours’ drive from almost every part of the country, and I frequently travel to all four corners to  share my experiences with new couples from all over the world.

I appreciate that planning these kinds of trips can be challenging – especially from a distance – so I’ve developed a range of  guides to help give an overview of some of the information that you might need to help you plan the perfect trip for your micro wedding. These guides are packed with tips on where to visit, where to stay and where to eat, and are reserved for couples who have a booking in place to come to Scotland.

If you’re still not sure of what your 2021 wedding plans could look like, here are 3 great reasons why this is the perfect time to elope to Scotland:

scotland is a great destination for small weddings.

After all of the uncertainties of 2020, isn’t it nice just to focus on what we can do, rather than what we can’t? Yes, Scotland has faced many of the same challenges that much of the world has had due to Covid restrictions, but as we continue to work through the regulations of Covid, we’re now able to focus on what we can do.

You can get married in Scotland under Covid restrictions, and as a country with a long history of working with ‘little’ weddings, you’ll find a range of suppliers who are experienced at helping you make the most of your micro wedding plans.

The regulations dealing with being married in Scotland also make it a very popular destination for couples coming to get married, either choosing to host their legal wedding here in Scotland, or looking to get married at home while having a wedding blessing ceremony here in Scotland. Essentially what may look like the ‘new normal’ has actually been normal in Scotland for a long time!

We offer great hospitality in Scotland

Scotland is one of the most hospitable countries in the world – we know how to make people feel welcome!

Scotland has always had a reputation for being a very friendly and welcoming place to visit. With all that Covid has taught us, we’re ready to get back to doing what we do best and offering great hospitality to help you make the most of your trip.

Because micro weddings are usually much more flexible in nature, they’re also much easier to organise. Some of the normal challenges of having limited weekend dates to accommodate supplier availability and guests being able to make it isn’t an issue when you’re planning to have a micro wedding. You can check out the Visit Scotland website to help plan your trip, or the Scottish Government website for extra info on getting married in Scotland.
